2 weeks ago we went in for a measurment with Chase. He was small....still. infact, he is below the charts. He is just a tiny baby. We scheduled another appt for 4 weeks later. Well the next day the dr. called and wanted to see us sooner than that. (That's never a "good" sign) We weren't really worried, since Chase is so developementaly ahead. However, it's tough when you can't do anything about it.
Well today we took Chase back in. And of course, he is still small. His height and weight are a little smaller in % again, if you can keep getting smaller than 0% he would. (He is growing, but the rate is slower than the "average" rate of kids, even slower than 1%, it may be confusing for those who aren't aware of the children's growth charts, but just go with me here. He isn't shrinking, he is groing, but not fast enough.)
To answer a question you might have, because I have gotten this question a few time. No my child is not going to be a "little" person. (I don't joke saying that. And I am not offended either, it is a valid question for thsoe not sure of what is going on.) I have to keep in mind that I was a VERY tiny baby too. I didn't weight 20lbs till close to 2 years old. (most weight that around 1). My head has also ALWYAS been tiny.
So the dr. told us today, she would call Cook's Children's Medical Center to consult about getting an MRI. (not the worst thing a mom could hear, but I still wasn't excited about it. The thought of my baby being sedated and limp is aweful.)
However, the dr. called and this is what she was told:
Most babies being remeasued about head size, is due to a large head, not small, so they would be looking for an abnormal growth, obviously that wasn't the real concern here. There simply isn't room in his head for anything. (that was a joke).
Also the only reasons they would examine a baby due to a small head is because the baby showed signs of metal slowness, or learning disablilities. Praise the Lord, God maybe made Chase little, but He also made him super advanced, so it is NO question that Chase is not sufferning from any learning disabilities.
Also Chase' softspot looks good, and the head plates are still just the way they should be.
The Solution:
Cook's Childrens Hopital did not recommend and MRI, so we aren't going to do anything.
The dr. is going to measure my head and use that as a guide for Chase more than the "average" baby charts. I am very confident in this, since I know my head is very small. I have always been able to wear children's hats, sunglasses etc. I am almost sure now that Chase's small head is a simple result of genetics.
